Environment: Geology Geologically the Andes are considered to be a young system originally uplifting in the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. Even today the mountain ranges of the Andes are continually rising, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In the Carangas region, the volcano Sajama (6,542m) is the most impressive feature on the landscape. Other important volcanoes in the area are Tata Sabaya (5385m), Sacabaya(4215 m), and Illimani (6480m). Bolivia's mountains contain many important deposits such as tin, lead, silver, copper, antimony, zinc, sulfur, bismuth, gold, and tungsten.
