Environment: Flora

The vegetation of the Carangas region consists of tough alpine grasses (ichu), evergreen shrubs (thola), and small trees (queñua) that provide forage for animals and construction material for local inhabitants. Cactus, mosses, herbs and lichens also grow in the arid environment. Agricultural crops were adapted to the high altitude thousands of years ago. Peoples of this region cultivate many varieties of potatoes, other Andean tubers, and quinoa, a nutritious grain. The lakes and wetlands also are home to several species of fish and ducks, as well as reeds that are used for the construction of boats, mats, and house roofs.
