New
York City Early Warning System for Housing Abandonment
Summary A collaborative project with the NYU Center for Urban Real Estate and Law
(M. Schill) and the Wharton Real Estate Center (S. Wachter) to develop a forecasting
model and decision support Geographic Information System (GIS) for anti-abandonment
efforts in New York City. This project involved the integration of over a dozen
municipal databases on housing and real estate in NYC at the parcel level, and
covering ten years, yielding a longitudinal, property-specific database for
conducting research on housing and neighborhood trends. The data and various
analysis tools were incorporated into a web-enabled GIS so that city agencies
and community organizations could potentially view and manipulate the underlying
data in the model, as well as view customized reports by property, regarding
ownership, building characteristics, tax arrearages, code violation history
and city actions.
